Terrible Child

When I talked to my mom yesterday, she said that nights in central Saskatchewan are still around -10 C and there is at least a foot of snow covering their entire front lawn (no green to be seen yet). Because I am a terrible child, I'm going to show my sympathy with this photo. It's the lilacs in our garden. They're blooming.

I really like Saskatchewan but today I'm preferring BC.

Blooming

What else is blooming? Magnolias, hyacinths, daffodils. It's full-on spring here.

You know it's REALLY spring with the plum tree blooms and the bees start buzzing. This was actually our view Monday afternoon in 20+ degree weather.

More Than Just Lipstick

You might remember, back in November 2010, we renovated the our front entrance stairs and porch. It went from this:

Last summer, Jeff put in a brick landing and hung shutters. This summer, we've concentrated on landscaping.  The week of my graduation (mid June), it looked like this: 

And now, after a date with a can of high gloss black paint, here's a peak of what the final reveal will FINALLY look like (we're just waiting for a new mailbox and house numbers): 

Our original goal was to create some curb appeal.... and I think we've been successful. HOORAY!

And so ends our week of the roses. 

Gather while ye may

Ugh. I didn't realize we had rose aphids until I took this photo. Off to the garden I now go, with a bowl of soapy water and a pair of rubber gloves...

War of the....

Roses are...

not just red in our garden. They are also fuchsia on the outside and yellow on the inside.

They are also growing as high as my 1.5 story roof...

Stop and smell

The sun came out this weekend. FINALLY! And with it, so did our roses. Because I've been working on work things and can't think of anything more exciting to blog about... this week is going to be rose tour. Here goes.

Still gardening

I haven't written much about our garden... maybe because we've been working weekends and evenings like crazy to tame it. We've also completed the final stage of landscaping for our front step remodel... I'll post before and after shots next week, but here's a sneak peak.

Sign of Spring

On Saturday, Jeff took this photo of rhododendrons blooming in his parent's garden - our bushes are about to erupt into blossom as well. This winter has felt especially long to me and I'm so happy to welcome spring.

Spring

Even with a threat of snow this week, spring is most certainly in the air. And after a fairly warm winter, our magnolias are happily covered in buds.

Around here...

Yesterday, I took a photo on our front step. I was planning to post a cheeky comment today about how our annual snowfall arrived this week.

But this morning I awoke to this.

I know- it's really not that bad. It's just a bit unusual for us islanders. A part of me wants to wrap up these magnolia blooms and keep them warm until spring.

Annual snow

We usually get snow for about 48 hours here on the Island- that is, a TOTAL of 48 hours each winter. It seems our annual snowfall arrived this weekend.... and here's hoping that's it for winter this year!
